PSEA members that skydived included:
Mrs. Hamill chosen by the Thunderbees;
Mrs. Rush chosen by the Wildcats;
Mrs. Kline chosen by the White Team;
Mrs. Bruno chosen by the Red Team;
Mrs. Lovett and Ms. Iskra, student council co-advisors and fundraiser coordinators;
Mr. Gerrity, who personally raised $575 by getting egged;
Mrs. Drum, librarian and Mrs. Kellner, science teacher and skydiving instructor/videographer
Also skydiving were support staff, Mr. Sapak, District Technology Specialist
and, of course, our own Crestwood Middle School Principal Brian D. Baddick (in a cow suit).
Please don't think that these educators took the idea of skydiving lightly. Some took many weeks and much research before they put their name on the ballot and confided that they hoped that they wouldn't be chosen, they were. One person even confided that they were so nervous that they had diarrhea for three days prior to the scheduled jumps, yet they all went through with it.
These educators truly deserve a great deal of respect.
Teachers Go to the EXTREME for Charity
One of the duties of a Crestwood Middle School teacher that has never been part of the original job description was volunteering to plunge 10,000 feet from an airplane to the ground with the use of a parachute. Well, you better buckle the harnesses because the “BUZZ” around school for the past several weeks is that the students have been raising money through a ‘penny wars’ to accumulate enough cash to send their teacher of choice to the skies for that very courageous drop.
“Toss a Teacher” is the name, and raising funds for “Relay for Life”is the game. Many teachers at Crestwood Middle School have volunteered to take the plunge if enough funds are raised and will actually plummet to the Earth at over 120 mph on a Tandem skydive. The “Toss a Teacher” idea is being used as the extrinsic motivating incentive to the students and staff to raise money for the Mountaintop Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society annual event.
For each $600 raised, the winning team of students and staff get to choose a teacher to “toss”. Student council has set the bar high with an ultimate goal of at least $3000. If the school reaches or exceeds their $3000 goal, even the middle school principal, Mr. Brian Baddick, will take the plunge for his students and for charity.
The skydives are scheduled to occur starting at 5pm on May 30th, 2008 with the Above the Poconos Skydivers at the Hazleton Municipal Airport, weather permitting, in conjunction with the kick off of the Hazleton Relay for Life.
Thus far, the staff and students have raised over $2,200 toward their goal. We’re 2/3 of the way there, and at least 3 teachers will be named to take the plunge. Don’t let them do it alone. And don’t let the principal “off the hook.” Please continue to support our school in its support of the most worthy cause “Relay for Life.”
